May
Queen
|
|
|
May
is the 5th month of the year. It is known as the Queen
of Months. The main holiday is May Day or Beltane. Beltane
means "bright fire". Beltane celebrates the
sacred union, or marriage, of the Goddess and God, celebrating
growth and fertility. The traditional part of the holiday
is the May Pole, which is a massive symbol of fertility.
The Maypole was cut and erected by unmarried men. The
unmarried women would decorate it by attaching colorful
ribbons to the top. Then they would all dance around
the pole in two circles, the girls going one way and
boys the other, weaving in and out until the whole pole
was braided with ribbons. Very sexual! Making and exchanging
flower wreaths was also big with the young people. And
let's not forget the Green Man, an ancient nature spirit
who brings life to the fields and forests after the
long winter. He often rode about the May Pole dance
on a horse and those whom he touched during the dance
would be pregnant before the year was out.

Moon
Flowers... |
|
During
May, the flowers begin to bloom and are abundant. In
fact, the May Full Moon is called the Flower Moon and
is a great time for all types of green magic. Lilacs
repell evil, wild violets bring love, and dandelions
help contact spirits. The Full Moon is also great for
fertility and sex magic. Now, now none of that! Sex
magic isn't always about actual intercourse or tantric
involvement. Any project or desire you may have can
be done under the guise of sex magic. Creating, or giving
birth, to an idea and watching the energy grow and grow
until it peaks, leaving in the aftermath the manifestation
of your desire. This Full Moon why not introduce your
lover to your extracurricular "broom closet"
activities - that is if your alter and "I Love
the Goddess" T-shirt did not tip him/her off already.
Place a candle, with a symbol or picture of your intent
painted or carved into it, on your altar. Or you can
draw, trace with oils, or use body paint to place the
symbol on you or your lover's body. Then go to bed and
try to rub the symbols off each other - without using
your hands!

Happy
Mother's Day! |
|
|
May is
the month to honor females and Mother's Day is a time to honor
our mothers, grandmothers, and all those special women in
our lives. For an easy spell honoring the women in your life
who've touched your heart, place a green candle amid pictures
of objects that are special to them. Light some sandalwood
or sage incense. Now thank all your "mothers" for
all that they have done and continue to do for you. And while
you are remembering your mother, it only makes sense to reconnect
with your inner child. Find a favorite toy or happy memory
from when you where young. Sit in a quiet place and meditate
on it. Allow all those feelings you thought you had dealt
with come up and then let them go. Keep only the happiness.
Once that is done, remain still and listen to your inner child,
your inner voice. Now that you've examined and learned from
your past, you can do a tarot
card reading to see what is waiting for you in the future.

Don't
tick off the Fairies! |
|
May's
warm weather and blooming foliage makes this a great time
to go outside! Have a picnic, watch the clouds or stargaze.
Pick some flowers - just be sure to leave a small token for
the Fey Folk first - anything pretty or sweet will do nicely.
You can always leave a small honey cake for the Fairies in
your garden and then make a wish. Or if you fear the Fairies,
take a branch from a Rowan tree and place it at your window
for protection.
Here is
a real nice and simple recipe for a honey cake I found in
Llewellyn's 2007 Magical Almanac:
- Melt 2 1/3 cups of sugar and 1 cup of honey together over
a low heat
- Mix in 5 1/2 cups of flour, 1 2/3 cups of citron, 2 tbsp.
diced orange peal, and 3 tbsp. each powdered ginger and cinnamon
- Roll out the dough and cut into spring shapes or magical
symbols
- Bake at 350 degrees until done
